The Great Upheaval
A monument commemorating Le Grand Dérangement, or “The Great Upheaval,” of the Acadian people from their home in Canada was erected October 11, 2011 at the Bayou Terrebonne Waterlife Museum in Houma, LA.
As part of the British military campaign against New France, a deportation order was signed in 1755 to force the Acadians from their homelands in Canada. Several Acadians migrated to the Mississippi River Basin of Louisiana, where “Acadians” became known as “Cajuns”. The monument includes a replica of the Deportation Cross in Grand-Pré, Nova Scotia, the official site of Le Grand Dérangement.
The monument in Houma was the first in the United States marking the journey of the expelled Acadians.
